History

In 1932 a group of music teachers came together to form the British Columbia Registered Music Teachers’ Association (BCRMTA). Three years later, A national organization, the Canadian Federation of Music Teachers Associations (CFMTA), was founded in Vancouver, BC.

In 1985 a group of ten music teachers in the Tri City area wanted to promote continued learning for teachers and quality private music lessons for students, so the Coquitlam-Maple Ridge branch of the BCRMTA was formed. The Coquitlam-Maple Ridge branch is now one of twenty-one branches of the BCRMTA. Since its inception in 1985, it has grown to approximately 70 members, offering a wide variety of music education.

To become a member, a high level of training is required; teachers must have completed a degree of diploma program in music.
