Canada Music Week

Canada Music Week is a celebration of Canadian Music. It was founded in 1960 and continues to be an annual event where the importance of Canadian music is highlighted through supporting Canadian composers, student performers and music educators.

We at the Coquitlam/Maple Ridge branch of the BCRMTA, share this vision by presenting the Canada Music Week Recital during the third week of November.  We use a two-part approach where one, students are encouraged to present their own compositions as well as perform repertoire by a Canadian composer of their choice. Secondly, exceptional student achievements in practical and theoretical exams are invited to perform and are presented with trophies.

For an added educational component, featured composers have been invited to commission a piece of music for the branch, or present a short “composer talk” for recital participants. For some added fun, we try to promote Canadian composers by including a chance to win a collection of Canadian compositions for various levels. Lastly, every performer heads home with a small “treat” for participating in Canada Music Week!

The deadline for submitting entries for the recital is Nov. 1 and for submitting student marks for trophies is Oct. 15.
